Event description

Description

The Reykjavik Confessions is a riveting true-crime story of murder, false memory and madness in the darkest corners of Iceland, based on a celebrated landmark BBC News investigation.

In 1974, 18-year-old Gudmundur disappears after a boozy night in a fishing town near Reykjavik. Eleven months later Geirfinnur, a quiet family man, goes missing from Keflavik harbour in the southwest of Iceland after being summoned by a mysterious phone call from home.

Both men are eventually presumed dead, but their bodies are never found and as a result this quiet island is in uproar - two disappearances with no forensics, no leads, with no clue what has happened.

Soon, the vanishings set in motion an almost surreal series of events, a remarkable tale of corruption, forced confession, false memory and madness that stretches over 40 years.

The Reykjavik Confessions is a chilling journey of discovery into a dark corner of Icelandic history, and a riveting true-crime thriller.

Simon Cox is an award winning investigative reporter at the BBC, working across Radio 4, BBC World Service, TV news and BBC news online. He has also written for the Sunday Times and presented Channel 4 Dispatches. In the past year alone he has investigated a global fake degree scam; child trafficking and corruption in tennis. He has reported from over 30 countries covering stories ranging from Ebola in DR Congo to a charity scandal in Malawi. His original investigation into The Reykjavik Confessions was read by over a million people on the BBC News website, and he is an executive producer and consultant on an upcoming dramatization of the story.
