“Spillett doesn’t shake you by the hand so much as grab you by the throat…” Brian Morton, The Penguin Guide To Jazz Recordings
Simon's debut appearance at the Chandos last year drew a big crowd and a tremendous response to his breathtaking set of hard-swinging jazz centered around the music of Britain's first international jazz star, Tubby Hayes
Described by the late Humphrey Lyttelton as ‘formidable’, Simon has won several awards for his music, including the tenor saxophone category of the British Jazz Awards (2011), Jazz Journal magazine’s Critic’s Choice CD of the Year (2009) and Rising Star in the BBC Jazz Awards (2007).
He’s worked with Sir John Dankworth, Stan Tracey, Peter King and The Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. He has recorded three albums, Introducing Simon Spillett, Sienna Red and Square One, all of which have received highly favourable reviews in both the specialist and national press. His festival, concert and club appearances across the UK have included sold-out gigs at Ronnie Scott’s and the Brecon Jazz Festival and he has broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz-Line Up with his own band.
He has also worked as a writer, penning the definitive biography of UK jazz legend Tubby Hayes (The Long Shadow Of The Little Giant), articles for magazines including Jazz Journal and Record Collector and acting as a consultant for a number of jazz record labels, in which capacity he has written booklet essays for over seventy albums.
“Those of us who have caught him…have been left blinking in disbelief. It’s not only his mastery of the tenor saxophone, phenomenal though that is, but the absolute conviction of his playing that is so impressive.” Sunday Observer

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is on-street parking in the roads round the pub.
Colindale underground station (Northern Line) is a short walk away.
Can I pay on the night?
Yes, for those who haven't pre-booked there is a collection at the interval (although you won't be entitled to the discount on meals). We do expect you to contribute the normal admission fee unless you qualify for a concessionary rate…
Are there any concessions?
Students and unwaged can turn up on the night and pay whatever you like (or even nothing). We want you to be able to enjoy the music, and maybe you'll come back and pay the full admission in better times…
Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?
Don't hesitate to call Rick at Just East of Jazz on 020 8361 0265 for questions about the gig.
For queries about the pub — food, drink, access and so on, call the guv'nor Em on 020 8200 0032.
When & Where
Just East of Jazz
Just East of Jazz is the record label and management partnership for the band Just East, the band that used to be called Just East of Jazz. Glad we got that cleared up.
Lately we've been promoting regular jazz & food nights at a great new pub venue in North London…check out the venue website:
