About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

The Sing for Freedom Choir is a community of torture survivors and friends who sing together in a spirit of joy and hope, in solidarity with all those who are oppressed. The choir sings for freedom and to give back a voice to those who have been silenced.

In this free taster session, taking place at Christ Church, Highbury in North London, our Musical Director Ellen Muriel will lead energising vocal warmups and beautiful new songs. You'll get a sense of the character of the choir, what the term has in store, and then you can decide if you would like to join as a member.

We welcome people of all backgrounds, beliefs, genders, sexuality and ages (although if you're 16 or under please come with an adult) and all levels of singing ability. There are no auditions - a desire to take part and a love for music are the only qualities you need. All welcome.

Book your free ticket for a taster session and we'll be in touch before the start of term!

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any singing experience?

Not at all. Many of our members come to us without any experience of singing or music, and most do not read music. Others have sung in choirs or bands before. Regardless of experience, all are welcome and you will be supported with everything you need to take part fully.

Do I need to bring anything?

No, just yourself! A pencil and a bottle of water are useful but not essential.

What happens if I would like to join the choir regularly?

You will be invited to sign up officially and then you can join us every Thursday for rehearsals, as well as taking part in performances each term.

Is there a cost to joining the choir?

We invite a termly donation to help cover the costs of running the choir. The choir is free for refugees and people seeking asylum.
