Event description
Sir Henry Parkes born in Canley, Coventry. 27th May 1815. On this guided tour you'll learn how a Canley kid became the Father of Australia.

About this event

Sir Henry Parkes was born on 27th May 1815. On what would be his 206th Birthday from a small house in the suburb of Canley, Coventry he rose to be the Premier Politician in Australia.

Our experienced tour guide will take you his journey from his birth and subsequent baptism in the village of nearby Stoneleigh equipped young Henry from his humble beginnings to emigrate to New South Wales, Australia then rise through the Political ranks to be considered the founding father of the Australian Federation.

Your guided tour will start in Coventry City Centre on Bayley Lane at the Twin City Roundel where we will discover just how far Parkes (named after Sir Henry) is from Coventry, how it came to become just one of our 27 Twin Cities.

The same Parkes in New South Wales that featured in the Feature Film, The Dish about how the American Moon Landings would be broadcast from the moon back to a remote outback observatory and why it was chosen.

We will then make our way to our Henry's birthplace, visit the church where he was baptized, possibly stop off at a railway station acknowledging arguably Canley's greatest citizen before travelling back down his road and back into the City Centre where we will visit Sir Henry's Star in Coventry's Walk of Fame in time for you to stop for a cultural lunch somewhere.

The tour has lots of photo opportunities and is suitable for New South Wales Aussies, Canley and Coventry citizens, students and all round history fans.

Our tours are usually carried out by a costumed character tour guide, however (we are awaiting confirmation from our costume providers if they have a Sir Henry Parkes outfit or if you'll get Crocodile Dundee, a character from Neighbours or Jason Donovan lookalike himself).

Our tours are both fun and educational but the emphasis is on learning whilst enjoying yourself, we try and make history fun, there will be anecdotes, catchphrases and perhaps even the odd sing-a-long on our recently bought mini bus.

So, "get on the bus, forget about us, and put the blame on me, if we don't tie and green and yellow ribbon, round the old oak tree"

Until 21st June, ALL our tours are strictly limited to 5 people plus Tour Guide so booking now is strongly advised. This will be our only Sir Henry Parkes Birthday Tour this year so booking is advised to discover more about Sir Henry Parkes, Canley and Coventry's finest politician.
