Event description
Description
Sir Nicholas Throckmorton, a powerful Tudor courtier who backed Lady Jane Grey as Queen, was put on trial for High Treason in 1554, but was acquitted - and kept his head. How did he manage it? What happened to him? Why was he so well-regarded by his peers? If Lady Jane Grey was a puppet, who was pulling the strings?
This talk delivered by Thom Jackson, will explore
The Man - his background and his family
The Courtier - how he entered the service of the Royal Court and how he influenced the story of Lady Jane Grey.
The Trial - how he, like Jane, stood trial for treason in the Guildhall, but was acquitted.
The Pardon - how he survived the upheavals and continued to serve as a courtier under Elizabeth I (very briefly)
The focus will be on 1553-1554, with the death of Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey and Throckmorton switching sides to back Mary I.,
