The recenlty created Ubele Initiative http://ubeleinitiative.wordpress.com is hosting a unique and creative event. Twenty (20) African and Caribbean women will come together in a creative space for challenging dialogue, conversation and support to help our community's future emerge.
Although part of the Ubele initiative, this event is for women only who want to create opportunities for collaboration in the aftermath of a series of disturbing community events which have taken place recenlty - http://ubeleinitiative.wordpress.com/blog/
We need to find a way to break the silence that often surrounds our community when tragic issues occur and design collective, creative and effective responses.
If you view yourself as an informal or formal community based leader, have some insights into the challenges facing the African and Caribbean community in London, are curious about using processes such as 'sensing' and 'reflection' and are committed to the creation of innovative solutions and lasting social change, the Ubele 'Sisters in Conversation' event could be for you.
During this first day there be no Powerpoint presentations, no 'expert' speakers or panels or defnately no 'Q and A'! However come with an open mind, open heart and open will and it will be amazing to see what our community can achieve!
You should not leave the day feeling bored, frustrated and unclear about potential ways forward for some our community's more stuck social issues.
Come along and try a different creative approach, meet some fantastic African and Caribbean female community based leaders and facilitators of social change and be in on the begining of a new, energising and creative initiative.
As Ubele is a presently a self-funded initiative, we are asking for donations of a minimum of £5.00 per person. (sisters who are unable to donate will still be able to participate).
Places will be offered on a first come basis, however, we would ideally like to create a pan London spread of participants.
Ubele is Swahili for The Future - it is a intergenerational, cross gender initiative which aims to support the African and Caribbean community create new solutions to some of our seemingly most tough social issues.
We plan to design a similar event soon which includes us co-creating with our brothers!
This event is being hosted with the kind support of the Women's Reource Centre http://www.wrc.org.uk/
