The scientific study of cultural heritage artefacts is particularly challenging, as breaking them apart to see inside simply isn't an option. However, over the past decade there has been significant interest in what non-destructive techniques, such as neutron scattering or muon spectroscopy, can add to our existing knowledge. These techniques allow researchers to see what is happening beneath the surface without damaging the artefact.

Travelling to the site: The Science Transit Shuttle bus departs regularly from the University Club to Harwell Campus – please check the schedule and ensure you arrive at the main reception in time to start the tour at 1pm. If driving, please provide your name, department, email and car registration number at least two weeks before the visit date.

Additional info: The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a world-leading centre for research at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments give unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale.
