Event description
Racism and Intersectional Oppressions - Isha Mckenzie-Mavinga

About this Event

" The presence of racism in therapeutic process can cause considerable discomfort. Powerful feelings associated with other oppressions that both client and therapist may have experienced can be triggered. Likewise, the impact of racism can be triggered by other oppressions. Our ability to sit with this discomfort may rely on whether we consider the damaging and traumatic effects of racism to be a theme that warrants attention and process, and whether therapeutic approaches are heavily influenced by Eurocentric theory or dominated by attention to other oppressions. In thinking about this challenge, it is important to consider how personal coping skills come in to play and whether the therapist feels robust enough to sit with and safely hold this duality. This process is sometimes met with judgemental interpretive responses, or no response causing denial and silence that can get transferred to the therapeutic relationship, using examples from Isha’s published works this talk will address what sitting with this process can mean."
