Episode 2: Reflective Step 1: Noticing the Unseen | Six Stages Framework Journal Series

Welcome to Episode 2 of the Six Stages Framework Reflective Journal Series with Dr. Shungu M’gadzah!

https://youtu.be/Yn-sI3krxuA

📄 Video Description

In this episode, we explore Reflective Step 1: Noticing the Unseen — the powerful practice of slowing down, observing our environments, and recognising the voices, experiences, and stories that are missing from our daily lives.

🌱 This step is all about awareness.

Who’s not in the room? Whose perspective are you not hearing? What assumptions are you unconsciously making?

Using the Six Stages Framework (SSF), we shift from passive awareness to active noticing — a foundational practice for any personal or professional journey in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB).

🧠 Journal Prompt:

“What identities or perspectives do I rarely hear from — and why?”

The SSF can become a daily companion for intentional growth and systemic change. These workshops centre on personal and professional application of the SSF — practical, reflective, and empowering:

✨ How do we move from awareness to action? From intent to impact? ✨

Too often, conversations around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) get stuck in definitions. But real change lives in the daily practice — in the moments we pause, reflect, challenge, and choose differently.

That’s where the Six Stages Framework (SSF) becomes more than a model — it becomes a daily tool for transformation.

🌀 Each reflective station invites us to notice:

• What am I aware of today that I wasn’t yesterday?

• Where do I still feel discomfort or resistance?

• How am I using my privilege, power, or position?

• What actions align with my values and commitments?

💡 And with each stage, we can ask:

• What strategy will move me forward today — listening? Reading? Speaking up?

• What might I journal about to deepen my self-awareness?

• Who am I learning from — and who am I centring?

Whether you’re a leader, educator, parent, or simply someone who wants to show up differently — the SSF can guide your journey.

Not perfectly. Not all at once.

But intentionally. And sustainably.

You will be supported to use Six Stages Framework questioning in you daily personal and work life.

📝 That’s why I’ve developed practical workshops, workbooks and reflective journals — for adults, young people, and organisations — to support movement through the stages, not just understanding of them.

Because the goal isn’t just to “do the work.”

It’s to live it. Daily. Courageously. Compassionately.

📍Where are you in your journey today?

Each week, has a strategy you can use.

We have been incredibly fortunate at Coram IAC to have Dr Shungu Hilda M'gadzah deliver our #Equality Diversity & Inclusion programme and would highly recommend this opportunity for schools
    Specialist Educational Psychologist
"I’m put in mind of the time Shungu delivered some work for us on the Six Stages Framework. She challenged all of us to own the views and biases that we held that were in some way racist - she explained that this is an early and integral step towards growth. It was incredibly hard and I’m not proud to say that when she asked for volunteers I believe she was met with the proverbial tumble weed. Accepting that we may hold -phobic or -ist views is deeply uncomfortable. As a rule we’re all good, ethically minded people. But we’re not impervious. Exploring our own biases also requires criticality, curiosity, and, bravery."
      Assistant Educational Psychologist
"I took up Shungu’s invitation to attend one of her free seminars on
anti-racism and I have to say it was excellent. The 6 stages diversity
framework she presented is such a useful tool of self reflection to examine
the extent of our own privilege but also a great way for organisations to
monitor and evaluate their anti-racist practice. One of the concepts she
spoke so eloquently about was that of “caves of privilege” whereby people
are surrounded by others of similar backgrounds and perspectives to
themselves on social media which then acts as an echo chamber to further
reinforce our own views and prejudices. I remember at the time thinking
that this could be a really useful starting point as a way in to attempt to
better understand issues the trans and non binary community are currently
facing (the terminology of “building bridges of empathy”)."
