Description

Background

The Department of Health’s End of Life Care Strategy, published in 2008, emphasised the need to raise the quality of care provided to dying people and their loved ones in a variety of settings including care homes.

The strategy identified the need for care home staff to receive the training and support to ensure the provision of good end of life care.

It recommended more coordinated services which could see NHS and statutory social care authorities providing more support to care home staff and managers and their residents. Such support would reduce the number of unplanned hospital admissions, ensuring more people can die in their care home if that is their expressed preference (DOH 2008). One of the outcomes was the publication of a training programme for care homes.

The National Six Steps Programme was developed in partnership between Merseyside and Cheshire Cancer Network, Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network, and Cumbria and Lancashire End of Life Network with support from the National end of Life Care Programme. The programme aims to enhance end of life care through facilitating organisational change and supporting staff to develop their roles around end of life care.

The programme has been adapted by St Luke's Hospice Plymouth to provide an accredited training programme for care homes in Plymouth.

North Devon Hospice is committed to provision of end of life care to health care professionals in all settings to promote quality care for all patients. The Six Steps is a comprehensive training programme that offers care homes and domiciliary care agencies the opportunity to be competent and confident in provision of sensitive, compassionate, end of life care for their residents.
