About this event

Travel & Outdoor • Other

This talk and informal tour, led by Iain Borden - skateboarder, historian and author of Skateboarding and the City - explores the 50-year history of skateboarding at Crystal Palace Park.

From the first UK national championships in 1977 to the well known half-pipe of the 1980s, and through to the award-winning skatepark opened in 2018, the event traces how the site has evolved and remained a key space for skateboarders over the decades.

Iain will also explain the design of the current skatepark, how it came to be, and the broader social and community role it plays today. Open to anyone interested in skateboarding, local history, public space or urban design.

This event is made possible thanks to a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players.
