Sketch book walk

On this slow paced walk you will start at Hamble Railway Station and walk part of the railways trail towards Hamble Common. Along the way you will be collecting, photographing and drawing objects from the natural world to create a unique story of your journey.

As you walk, you will find and collect interesting objects and artefacts such as feathers, twigs, leaves and other natural items, before finding a space to record your observations within a folded, handmade concertina sketch book to keep.

About the artist - John Ainsworth(whenwewerecows)

My creative practice is centred on my interest around human connection with landscape, time, and memory. My work, as an illustrator, is grounded in the act of walking, collecting, or photographing details from the landscape before assembling them into larger, interconnected drawings that create a permanent echo or a memory of a place by committing them to paper. I mostly work with traditional drawing material, spending time with an object to study its construction, shape, and effect before committing it to paper.

As an artist/illustrator I am always intrigued by the connection between moving through a landscape and responding creatively to it. The impact on wellbeing from understanding how we connect with spaces and places and our role as guardians of local spaces enables us to anchor ourselves within time and space – to respond in a way that no-one else will ever be able to. There is a genuine beauty in spotting a feather, an insect, a trick of the light and then having the time to record it as drawing or note making and record it as a memory for posterity.

At the end of August I will be ending my 25-year career as an art teacher to focus full time on my artwork.
