The Skills Bootcamp in Painting and Decorating has been designed to address the skills gap in Finishing Trades within the Construction and Housing sector by gaining the practical techniques and knowledge of working practices required to access employment opportunities, or offer professional services, in this specialist trade.
Learners will benefit from hands-on training in specialist facilities at the Penwith Campus in Penzance, gaining the foundations needed to progress into employment, self-employment, an apprenticeship or further study within the Construction sector.
Introductory Session:
• Course starts on 16th January 2026 and runs until 20th March 2026
• Opportunity to meet with the College’s expert Lecturer in Painting and Decorating
• Take part in taster activities to gain an overview of techniques, tools, and study requirements of the full taught programme
• Discover the benefits of becoming an adult learner at Truro and Penwith College
• Meet with trained Guidance Officers to discuss career aspirations and any additional support or accessibility requirements.
Course Outline:
The Skills Bootcamp in Painting and Decorating is a nine-week programme designed for adult learners (aged 19 and over) who are looking to access a career in the occupational area of finishing trades, or to develop the specialist practical skills and industry knowledge to enable them to take on additional professional services or develop their career in the Construction and Housing sector.
Learners will gain an understanding of Painting and Decorating techniques, surface preparation and the safe use of equipment and materials alongside the wider employability skills relevant to this specialism, including team work and time management.
The Skills Bootcamp will be delivered in fully-equipped and specialist workshops at the Penwith Campus in Penzance; allowing learners to experience realistic working conditions and develop practical competence through supervised, hands-on learning.
By attending the Skills Bootcamp in Painting and Decorating, learners will:
· Develop practical skills in Painting, Wallpapering and decorative finishing techniques.
· Understand how to prepare surfaces and apply coatings to a professional standard.
· Gain awareness of tools, materials and safe working practices within a professional environment.
· Build confidence in working on both individual and team-based decorating projects.
· Explore different finishes and styles to meet client specifications.
· Develop wider employability skills, including communication, problem-solving and time management.
· Create a final project and portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence and readiness for professional development or employment opportunities.
Learners will also benefit from guest speakers and industry experts who will share insights into Painting and Decorating career pathways, apprenticeship opportunities and employment trends within the Construction industry.

Cost –
Thanks to funding from the Department for Education, there is no charge for individuals looking to re-train or upskill. SME employers will only need to pay 10% of the course fee if they enrol a member of staff (£262), whilst large organisations will be asked to contribute 30% (£785).
