Skills for debate and running a model UN

Welcome to our exciting event where students and teachers can learn skills for debate in the morning followed by how to successfully run a Model United Nations Conference in the afternoon! Join us at the Temple Of Peace for either or both sessions - Register now to secure your spot!

Using debating skills in the primary classroom

Studies show that learning debating empowers young people in a wide variety of areas. From self-confidence and communication, to written skills and leadership prospects; it is clear that being able to look at both sides of an argument empowers us both inside and outside the classroom.

During this half-day course, which is open to pupils and teachers working at progression step two, we will work together to explore:

· What techniques in arguments are helpful and unhelpful

· How to think critically and thoughtfully about the information you’re looking at

· How to change your mind if the evidence shifts

· Taking on first-hand experience of making rules

· Exploring the dynamics of power on rule making

This course is ideal for LLC leaders, wellbeing groups and student councils but also supports communication and citizenship skills including problem solving, agreeing shared definitions and persuasive techniques. We are inviting teachers and a small group of their students to attend together so that they can implement their learning collaboratively back in their learning settings.

WCIA have a rich experience of student empowerment through the changemakers programme and we ran the Wales Debating competition for more than a decade. We are excited for this opportunity to work with you during this training.

For groups who attend, we will also offer a free follow-up workshops schools/organisations to broaden the impact.

Model United Nations

The welsh national curriculum has an emphasis on asking our learners to be curious, to think critically and to reflect upon evidence presented in a world that is becoming ever more dynamic and diverse. With its rich tradition of the Model United Nations format, WCIA will be hosting a half-day teacher training to empower teachers and a small selection of their students to use the framework to meet the needs in their classroom.

During this half-day course, which is open to pupils and teachers working at progression step two, we will work together.

The training will include:

· Mapping the Model UN against the National Curriculum for Wales

· Step by step planning and practical resource tips

· Practical tips on how to overcome overwhelm on larger global issues

· Exploring options for assessment and learning

This course is aimed at developing understanding of global affairs and communication skills at progression step 2. However, we will also be looking at differentiated experiences for young people between the ages of 11-14. We are inviting teachers to work with us during the session to plan their own model united nations experience. Mae'r cwrs hwn yn addas ar gyfer arweinwyr LLC, grwpiau llesiant a chynghorau myfyrwyr, ond hefyd yn cefnogi sgiliau cyfathrebu a dinasyddiaeth gan gynnwys datrys problemau, cytuno ar ddiffiniadau ar y cyd a thechnegau perswadio. Rydym yn gwahodd athrawon a'u myfyrwyr i fynychu gyda'i gilydd fel y gallant roi eu dysgu ar waith gyda'i gilydd yn eu lleoedd dysgu.
