Blue Smile Skills in the Room

WORKING WITH DEFENCES - LEARNING TO EMPATHISE WITH THE CLIENT'S DEFENCE

Trainer: Clair Lewoski

Working with defences seems central to how we find a way to the child or adolescent through psychotherapy. Frequently young people are referred to therapy when their defences of coping strategies are no longer serving them well. This session will look at how defences may be a way of trying to preserve or establish the child's ego functioning and why the therapist needs to empathise with these in the room. It will also explore the various theories underpinning our understanding of defences.
