About this event

Community • County

We are thrilled to announce that, supported by Creative Scotland, the Lightness Art Collective would like to invite our amazing community to join us this winter for a truly special project – a community art exhibition on the beautiful Skipness beach! Let’s come together to have some fun, unleash our creativity and celebrate Kintyre through art, stories and song.

You can take part by signing up to one of our free community art workshops held on Saturdays in November 2025 and January 2026. During the workshop, you will create your own boat sculpture from driftwood and decorate its sail whilst listening to a tale about the legendary Scottish sea monster, Cirein Croin, who caught unwary fisherfolk by disguising itself as silver fish to be landed in nets. You can learn an old Gaelic rhyme we've set to music describing the scale of its appetite!

The grand finale will be The Skipness Festival of Light in February, where we’ll showcase a week-long exhibition of the 300 community-crafted ‘ships’ illuminated by solar power. These individual creations will light up the beach each evening, welcoming the return of spring; Celtic Imbolc. Visited by the legendary Scottish Sea Monster, Cirein Croin, to chase away our fears and embrace our hopes and dreams for the future.

Frequently asked questions

Are there toliet facilities?

Yes, we will be using Skipness Village Hall as our venue which has good facilities.

Will there be food and drink?

Tea, coffee and water plus a biscuit or two, will be available during the workshop. There is a village shop located a few hundred metres from the hall with a variety of sandwich and snack options, plus cold drinks and barista coffee.

Can I take my sculpture home?

Eventually yes! We will need the sculpture to remain in Skipness until we have completed our exhibition week in February. Creators can then collect their sculptures to take home.

How accessible is the venue?

There is room for accessible parking at the front of the hall (one space) plus access ramps for wheelchairs and accessible toilet facilities.

Is there parking nearby?

For the duration of the workshop there is parking available on the beach. A couple of hundred metres from the hall. Please avoid parking in passing places.

I would like to book more than six tickets, can I do that?

These tickets are for the open community workshops and therefore numbers are limited to ensure availability. If you would like to organise a session for a larger group, please contact us directly via email: info@lightness.uk
