About this event

You are cordially invited to join Lorraine Evans - Mortuary Archaeologist/Death Historian and Fran Hollinrake - Custodian, St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney as they discuss the magnificent funerary memorials that line the walls of St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall. Displaying a fine array of mortality symbolism, these spectacular 17th century gravestones not only feature a wide range of death motifs, in the form of skulls, bones, coffins and hourglasses etc, but also offer a rare insight into the political shenanigans of the day, the art of social climbing and an attempt to enhance one’s relationship with God.

This is a FREE talk, the first in a series of events for the newly opened Symbols of Mortality Exhibition, on display in The Orkney Museum, Kirkwall, 7th October - 4th November 2023.
