Understanding human behaviour and wellbeing with online photographs

Our global society is uploading increasing volumes of photographs to the Internet, creating vast quantities of data on where we are and the environment we are spending time in. In this talk, we will describe recent research from our Data Science Lab at Warwick Business School, in which we investigate whether online photographs can give us new quantitative insight into human behaviour and wellbeing. We will outline a number of case studies spanning the domains of travel, health and economics, drawing on deep learning methods and more.

About the speakers

Suzy Moat and Tobias Preis direct the Data Science Lab at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, and are both Fellows of the The Alan Turing Institute. They will be joined by their collaborators Federico Botta and Mario Gutiérrez-Roig, Research Fellows in the Data Science Lab. The Data Science Lab’s research seeks to determine whether data on our usage of the Internet can help us measure and predict human behaviour. The lab's work has been featured by television, radio and press worldwide, by outlets such as the BBC, CNN, The Guardian, The Economist, New Scientist and Wired, and their FutureLearn online course on big data and human behaviour has catered for over 30,000 learners to date.
