Description

Computer Vision for Automated Vehicle Tracking and Classification using CCTV Surveillance Video by Mustafa Ellam, HM Revenue & Customs (Campus-funded MSc student)

The project aims to exploit existing CCTV video data in order to compute various road traffic parameters that include: direction of traffic flow, number of vehicles moving in each direction and vehicle velocity. This automated computer vision system can be divided into 3 logical components: vehicle detection, vehicle tracking and vehicle classification. This type of system would have the potential to better inform infrastructure design, improve safety protocols and support more effective government investment. The framework designed should be generalisable to other applications using CCTV footage, such as pedestrian analysis in urban locations like stations and airports. The talk will cover:

  • acquiring and Processing CCTV data
  • challenges in tracking and classification tasks using video footage
  • computer vision approaches considered for detecting, tracking and classifying objects
  • progress update and preliminary findings
