Join us for our upcoming event at the Nucleus at King’s Buildings or online on Wednesday 12th June, 6pm-8pm. The event will explore some of the steps being taken by the University to better understand its slavery and colonial past.

In 2021, the University of Edinburgh established a formal Review of Race and History Group to oversee a comprehensive and inclusive, academically led, examination of the University’s relationship with its past. As part of this Review, the Research and Engagement Working Group has been commissioned to develop an academic report on the University’s historical links to the histories of slavery, colonialism and the production of racial science, and produce evidence-based recommendations for the future. Led by Professor Tommy Curry, Personal Chair in Africana Philosophy and Black Male Studies, and Dr Nicola Frith from the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, the group is working with a team of dedicated historical researchers.

Chaired by Professor Emerita Rowena Arshad CBE, FEIS, Chair in Multicultural and Anti-Racist Education, this event will give alumni the chance to hear from Professor Curry and Dr Frith about the University’s approach to the Review and to learn first-hand about some of the emerging research from Dr Simon Buck and Dr Ian Stewart. This will include some initial findings into the University of Edinburgh’s financial links to slavery in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the implications for historical philanthropy. The lecture will also consider the role played by Edinburgh professors and students in the construction of the race sciences during this time period.

Dr Simon Buck and Dr Ian Stewart are historians and postdoctoral Research Fellows at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh.

A reception will follow the presentations and you will have the chance to connect with other staff members and fellow alumni from the University over drinks.
