West London Day Centre is excited to announce that we are running our second Sleep Out for the Shelter on Friday 21st October 2016. The money raised will go directly towards co-ordinating the Westminster Churches and Synagogue Winter Night Shelter, supporting homeless guests to move into longer term accommodation, find employment and begin a new chapter of their lives.
The Winter Night Shelter is coordinated by West London Day Centre. Every night of the week between October – May, a church or synagogue in Westminster opens its doors to provide vital respite for homeless guests, who would otherwise find themselves out on the streets in the cold weather.
2015-16’s night shelter provided 63 street homeless people with temporary accommodation through the winter months. Alongside the day centre, the shelter supported 39 people into longer term housing, and assisted 11 people to find paid work. This year, we want to help even more people.
This year’s Sleep Out for the Shelter will be hosted by St James’s Piccadilly, in the secure gardens of their grounds. St James’s Church Piccadilly are one of the host venues of the night shelter, and graciously held the Sleep Out last year. 2015’s Sleep Out for the Shelter raised an absolutely fantastic £25,434 – will you help us to beat that figure this year?!
We will provide hot refreshments and entertainment in the evening before we all bed down for the night, in the beautiful gardens. In the morning breakfast will be served – just like it is in the night shelter – inside the church. This is a time for collective reflection on our experiences and thoughts of the night before, and to discuss why services like the Westminster Churches and Synagogue Night Shelter are so essential.
By taking part in the Sleep Out, you get to experience (in a safe way) a few challenges that street homeless people have to face every night. We’re not trying to replicate homelessness, but we hope it will help you to understand a little of what homeless people have to endure without the support of the winter night shelter. Thank you!
