SlowCooker Series Workshop 2: Suk-Jun Kim, 'Walking Slowly at Union Street'...
Fri, 13 Nov 2015, 10:00 – Sat, 14 Nov 2015, 15:00 GMT
WALKING SLOWLY AT UNION ST.
PERFORMING LISTENING AND LIVE CODING
I am a composer and sound artist who teaches composition and sonic arts at the University of Aberdeen. In this workshop, I will introduce two seemingly different activities we can use for live (sound) performance: slow walking and coding.
On day one, the artist will introduce slow walking as a tool for listening to a mundane place. He and the participants will use Aberdeen’s high street, Union St., as their target, performing an extremely slow walk while listening to the sounds, striking conversations with fellow participants and people on the street. The goal will be to take a walk from one end of the street to the other as slowly as possible while listening to the place, people, and one's own sound-making. The artist and participants will also record sounds that will be used for the live coding performance, which will take place on the second day at The Anatomy Rooms, 19:30 - 20:30, with a contribution from sound artist Fiona Soe Paing.
On day two, The artist will introduce a program language called Tidal: he will install the software on participants' computers (who are therefore advised to bring their own laptops, albeit there will be some made available for those who do not have one) and quickly learn to use it for live coding. In the evening, the artist and participants will perform together in front of an audience in a free evening concert open to all.
What participants need for the workshop
The participants will be required to:
bring a laptop (Mac is perferred but PC or linux woud also work)
bring a set of headphones
wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes
a small notebook (you will need to carry it during the walk) and a pen
