About this Event

Every year the SLSA runs a conference for postgraduate students. The event is FREE, and open to members and non-members alike in order to encourage postgraduates unsure of their interest in socio-legal studies to test the water. It is led by well-known senior socio-legal academics with an established research record and understanding of the university sector. The 2021 conference is being hosted virtually by members of the SLSA Board and will take place on 6th-7th January 2021.

The conference is aimed at those starting out in their careers who may need guidance on issues such as: completing their postgraduate research; presenting their work to different audiences; getting their work published; and finding their first academic job. Students often find that they are the only socio-legally minded individuals in their law school and it is hoped that this event reduces the resulting feelings of intellectual isolation.

The conference is primarily aimed at PhD students at UK institutions in their first year of study, although it is open to all other students (e.g. those in 2nd and 3rd years, and outside the UK) to attend. Please note that only students who have not attended a postgraduate conference in the past are eligible for a place. There is a limit of five students from any one institution.

The conference will run through small group workshops on a range of topics led by socio-legal academics, and will be very informal. One of its aims is to encourage networking between postgraduate research students with an interest in socio-legal studies. There will be plenty of opportunities for discussion with other postgraduates, as well as with the facilitators. Everyone attending will be invited to submit a short synopsis of their research interests. These will be distributed to all conference attendees, so as to facilitate the networking process.

PLEASE NOTE: Places are restricted to 5 PGRs per institution. If more than 5 PGRs sign up for the SLSA PGR Conference, then there will be a ballot to decide the allocation of these places, with priority going to first year PhD students in the first instance.

Further details of the conference, including topics and a provisional schedule, can be found on our website: https://slsa.ac.uk/index.php/news/socio-legal-publications-2?id=372
