About this Event

Frikk Heide-Steen, conductor

Otto Christian Odland, accompanist

Augustine Noble is thrilled to present Sølvguttene at St James's Church, Piccadilly, as part of the choir's first UK concert tour in over a decade. The choir will perform a programme of sacred and classical choral music, as well as Norwegian folk songs, including works by Webber, Mozart, Franck, Händel, Tye, Schubert, Nystedt, and Sommerfeldt.

About the choir: Sølvguttene, or the 'Boys of Silver', was founded in 1940, and had their first rehearsals in the home of the conductor, Torstein Grythe. In 1951, the boys’ choir of Norwegian Broadcasting was taken over by Grythe, and from the 1960s, the two choirs were merged into one. Torstein Grythe held the position as the choir’s conductor for 64 years. He received great recognition for his work with the choir and was decorated with the King's Medal of Merit and the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. In 2004, Fredrik Otterstad took over as Sølvguttene’s conductor. Otterstad sung in the choir himself as a boy before studying at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Academy of Music. Sølvguttene has been on numerous tours both in Norway and abroad. During the last ten years, the choir has visited Italy, the Baltics, UK, Greece, Germany, South Africa, Turkey, USA, France and Switzerland. The choir has a varied repertoire, although they mostly perform classical sacred music and traditional Norwegian folk music. The choir regularly performs large-scale, classical works like Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem and Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor. In Norway, Sølvguttene is often associated with Christmas, as every year, the choir brings Christmas carols into Norwegian homes through a traditional television programme on Christmas Eve. In addition to the musical experiences, the choir also constitutes an important social arena for all members. Every year, the boy singers can participate in a summer camp. Skiing is arranged in wintertime, and the choir even owns an old boat used for different events during the summer. All of these activities contribute to a unique community where the boys learn, play and encourage each other to perform in rehearsals, concerts, and on tours.
