Small but mighty - winning new business with limited resource
For our evening events this year, we will be having a "war stories" theme, where we will be inviting well known and respected agencies and individuals to share their tales from the front lines of new business: honest, warts and all accounts of the challenges faced, mistakes made, lessons learnt and the hurdles overcome in their battle for growth.
This is our second evening event of the year and will focus on freelancers, small agencies and start ups, bringing you three amazing speakers who have taken a different approach to raising their profile and winning new business.
Ben Tallon, Illustrator
To celebrate the launch of his widely anticipated first book “Champagne and Wax Crayons” we have internationally renowned Illustrator, artist and art director Ben Tallon as our first speaker. Ben will share lessons learnt on the journey from his childhood hobby of drawing, to a freelance career working with the world’s most glamorous clients in illustration, graphic design, music, film and television.
From the highs of securing dream client World Wrestling Entertainment to the lows of unconventional methods of paying the tax bill, this promises to be a humorous and brutally honest account of navigating the art world alone, breaking into new markets and what you need to do to survive and thrive as a freelancer in the unpredictable and often surreal world of the creative industry.
Danny Ashton, NeoMam
Danny took pride in never having to make a cold call and then arrived at a point where NeoMam needed to make an extra £20k revenue to cover their costs for the next month.
Danny's story will show how they made some very hard decisions and implemented a successful new business strategy in a very short amount of time as they adjusted to a new environment that required them to have control over the number of clients they could win.
Danny doesn't have all the answers and there is still plenty for NeoMam to do but there are useful lessons to be learnt from their experiences that will benefit other small, growing agencies and those looking to move away from the uncertainty of relying on referrals and word of mouth for new business.
Nick Entwistle, One Minute Briefs
Nick created One Minute Briefs as a way of raising his profile, becoming famous and ultimately winning new business. The One Minute Briefs concept forces creatives to rely on their instincts and shares the content created virally, allowing their ideas to reach thousands of people in a very short period of time. As a result of these efforts, Nick has spoken at various events, including one where he was on the same card as Sir John Hegarty, won a hatful of awards and been featured in The Drum, New York Times and Buzzfeed.

The Art of New Business
The Art of New Business is a collaborative network of like-minded individuals set up by Karla Morales-Lee and Sarah Bradley. Our focus is on finding new ways of winning business, and giving support and advice to each other. We run events in London and Manchester for new business executives, managers and directors working in the creative sector. For each event we select speakers who can inspire our network to think differently about what they do and how to do it. We want to lead the search for ‘a better way’. That means better people, better processes, better tools and better results. Bringing in new business for your agency can often be a lonely, high pressured job, so this network has been set up to support and inspire those of you facing daily pressure to bring in new business, often in silo from the rest of their organisation.
