Smart Grid: European and Swedish Experience

Abstract

The energy system is in a global transition towards a sustainable energy system. Resource efficiency and environmental concerns are pushing towards change into use of renewable energy resources and to optimizing the energy usage. As a result of this transition there have been a huge increase in new capacity, in Europe mainly from wind and solar, during the last years. This development has however resulted in several challenges for the transmission system. The European Network of Transmission System Operators, ENTSO- E, has identified that 80% of the identified 100 bottlenecks in the transmission system in Europe are related to integration of renewable energy sources. Moreover, the trend for the transmission system is towards larger, more volatile power flows, over longer distances across Europe.

This presentation will give an introduction to Smart Grid with a European perspective, and show the challenges and possibilities. Examples will be given on Smart Grid Demonstration projects and from own research work.

Biography

Prof. Lina Bertling Tjernberg (Ph.D., M.Sc.) was a Visiting Professor with Stanford University, in 2014, a Postdoctoral Researcher with the University of Toronto, from 2002 to 2003, and a Visiting Researcher with the University of Saskatchewan, in 2000.

She is currently a Professor in power grid technology and the Director of the Energy Platform, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. She has published over 100 articles and an author of CRC Press with a book on Infrastructure Asset Management with Power System Applications (2018). Her research aims to develop models for electric power solutions for the future sustainable energy systems. Her research interests include applied reliability theory and maintenance management.

She was a member of the Swedish Government Coordination Council for Smart Grids, from 2012 to 2014. She has served as an expert for the EU commission within Energy, ICT, and Security. She is a senior member of IEEE and a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Power and Energy Society. She is the Past Chair of the Swedish PE/PEL Chapter. She has served on the Governing Board of IEEE Power and Energy Society and an Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SMART GRID. She chaired the first IEEE ISGT Europe Conference, in 2010.
