Smart Ventilation
University of Birmingham, April 1st 2019

This workshop is similar to, and builds on the experience of, a ventilation workshop held at the University of Bristol in September 2018 which received great feedback from attendees. It explores how developments in information, management, technology and other areas are creating opportunities to greatly reduce ventilation-related energy consumption in laboratories, with significant financial and performance benefits. In particular it aims to:

  • Develop a good understanding of how laboratory ventilation works, and opportunities to use this knowledge to identify:
    - simple actions that require little funding and can be taken in most current laboratory  contexts
    - more complex actions that require some capital spend but not a complete redesign
    - more fundamental actions that can be incorporated into major refurbishment or new build.

  • Make the case that more ambitious and co-ordinated laboratory ventilation improvement initiatives can create significant energy and financial benefits for universities, making it easier for them to achieve their energy and carbon targets (currently voluntary but possibly mandatory in future).
  • Facilitate discussion and networking between sustainability champions, estates engineers and project managers, and suppliers to develop capacity and lay the basis for more joined-up initiatives in universities.

This workshop draws on the experience of The University of California, Irvine, which has reduced its laboratory energy consumption by 40-50% through a strategic ‘Smart Labs’ programme (see more details overleaf). The presence of its Energy Manager Matt Gudorf is due to sponsorship of his travel costs by SkyFoundry, the provider of the SkySpark data management software which Irvine uses to support Smart Labs (more overleaf). See www.skyfoundry.com.

Tickets can be booked here and are free for early booking HE and research institute staff, £80 for sponsored suppliers (attending in conjunction with an HE employee) and £150 for other suppliers.
