Overview

Level 2 Smoking Cessation: 2 sessions (6.5hrs) for healthcare professionals covering readiness, addiction & medication support.

Training Requirement:

This is a two‑day course. Attendance on both days is mandatory to qualify as a Stop Smoking Practitioner and to receive certification. Please ensure you book both sessions when registering.

Day 1 of 2: Thursday 12th February 2025 from 10:50 to 17:00

Day 2 of 2: Friday 13th February 2025 from 09:20 to 16:00


Training Overview:

This course will give you the skills and knowledge needed to provide Smoking Cessation interventions to those wishing to quit smoking, including assessing readiness to stop smoking, understanding nicotine addiction and how to facilitate smoking cessation medications.


Pre-Requisite:

All participants wishing to attend will need to have completed the NCSCT Stop Smoking Practitioner online training module and passed the online assessment. This is a prerequisite to attending the training and you will need to provide your NCSCT registration number when booking.

On completion of this course, you will receive a certificate of attendance. We will invite you to annual refresher training which will be essential to keep your accreditation.


What does the training cover?

· The LCS Specification and PharmOutcomes

· Wider context of tobacco control

· Smoking prevalence locally and nationally

· Health effects of smoking and second-hand­­­ smoke

· Benefits of giving up

· Assessment of smoking status and readiness to quit

· Addiction and withdrawal

· Pharmacological treatments (smoking cessation medications)

· Local services and referral systems

· E-cigarettes

· Behavioural support - planning and delivering

· Smoking in pregnancy


Who is the training suitable for?

All healthcare professionals who will be delivering smoking cessation interventions.


Smoking Cessation Programme (SCP)

The Wellbeing Service provides training to Pharmacies to be eligible to operate the Smoking Cessation Programme. Specifically, Pharmacies will need:

5.3 Service A – Smoking Cessation Programme (SCP)

To be eligible to deliver the SCP providers will need to demonstrate that:

· Pharmacies wishing to deliver the SCP have a minimum of one member of staff trained as a Smoking Cessation Practitioner (their NCSCT registration number will need to be provided) and accredited on PharmOutcomes; this includes any refresher training and additional modules such as the NCSCT Pregnancy and the Post-Partum Period should provision be made to pregnant smokers.

· All staff accredited to provide smoking cessation support meet the minimum training requirements and are supported with ongoing CPD requirements, typically annual refresher training


Smoking Cessation Practitioner:

To meet the requirements to deliver the Smoking Cessation Programme (SCP) you will need to:


· Complete the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT) Training and Assessment Programme (e-learning) and take the practitioner assessment programme to achieve NCSCT certification (this will register you with the NCSCT as a certified practitioner and give you a registration number): https://elearning.ncsct.co.uk/

· Complete Smoking Cessation Practitioner Level 2 Training (available from the Wellbeing Service)


Should you wish to support pregnant smokers, you will also need to complete:


· NCSCT Pregnancy and the Post-Partum Period (e-learning) (this additional module will be shown under ‘Certified Practitioners’ on the NCSCT register): https://elearning.ncsct.co.uk/pregnancy_specialty_module-registration

Practitioner Registration numbers and module dates will be recorded on PharmOutcomes and enable your Pharmacy to be accredited to provide the SCP.
