SMUG is excited to announce their first Virtual MSK ultrasound Conference. We have an exclusive line-up with Carles Pedret, Jon Jacobson and Daniel Walkley.

Our special guests will share their extensive knowledge in a mixture of lectures, live demonstrations, Q&A and discussions.

Join us to learn from some of the best in MSK ultrasound, get some top tips to improve your scanning, gain new insights to challenge your clinical injury management and ask the experts your questions directly.

About the Presenters

Carles Pedret MD, PhD

PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Sports Medicine Specialist from the University of Barcelona. His expertise is in the treatment and return-to-play process of muscle and tendon injuries, especially ultrasound diagnosis and ultrasound guided procedures.

Interuniversity Master in Sports Traumatology and teaching activity in the field of ultrasound diagnosis and soft tissue injuries in universities such as University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Ramon Llull University and the Blanquerna University.

Participant in multiple research projects and co-author of articles published in prestigious national and international journals such as the British Journal Sports Medicine, American Journal Sports Medicine, Orthopaedic Journal Sports Medicine, Skeletal Radiology and Apunts: Medicina de l'Esport.

External advisor to multiple professional teams of the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, Spanish Liga Santander and Liga 1 2 3, China Super League, Belgium Pro League and German Bundesliga (football), Spanish ACB basketball teams and NBA teams and advisor to the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation.

He is co-author of the recently published, influential text book ‘ultrasound of Musculoskeletal System, anatomical exploration and pathology’ which is available in Spanish and English.

Jon A. Jacobson MD

Jon A. Jacobson, MD is a Professor of Radiology and Director of the Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology in the Department of Radiology at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Jacobson is a board-certified musculoskeletal radiologist whose research interests include musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI. His academic achievements include over 200 peer-reviewed publications and over 1100 invited national and international lectures or workshops. Dr. Jacobson has been a visiting professor on 39 occasions, is active in various medical societies, reviews for several journals, and has received numerous teaching and mentoring awards. Dr. Jacobson is the author of the textbook "Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound," which is now in its second edition.

Daniel Walkley PhD

Daniel holds a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound through the University of South Australia. Additionally, he possesses a Doctor of Philosophy through Charles Sturt University on the topic of Achilles tendinopathy – ultrasound assessment and management.

He has been an invited speaker for national and international conferences and collaborates with medical teams from the AIS, AFL, NRL, A-league & Cricket Australia; providing imaging and management advice for world-class athletes.

Daniel has a passion for musculoskeletal ultrasound and is currently working in Fowler Simmons Radiology, Adelaide. He combines his background as a Physiotherapist with his ultrasound skill-set to help diagnose and provide management advice on musculoskeletal problems.

Sports Medicine Ultrasound Group (SMUG)

We are passionate about educating/teaching other clinicians the great clinical value of ultrasound imaging; we developed our popular, tailored, highly practical courses for MSK clinicians, in small groups, closely supervised by experienced tutors, with a strong emphasis on integrating ultrasound imaging into clinical assessment and treatment management in Sports Medicine.

Robert Laus BSc MCSP

Robert Laus completed his degree in 1989 in the Netherlands. After moving to London in 1994 he set up sports injury clinics within premier health clubs in Central London and provided in-house services to large City corporations. In 2004 he co-founded the Waterside Physiotherapy Clinic, in Canary Wharf.

Robert is one of the pioneers and most experienced physiotherapists using diagnostic ultrasound imaging within sports injury management in Europe. Since 1996 he has fully integrated diagnostic MSK ultrasound imaging into his clinics, combining his expertise in sports medicine with ultrasound imaging and other image modalities. He was trained in MSK ultrasound imaging by the world leading MSK radiologists specialising in this field. Robert has a special interest in complex muscle and tendon injuries.

Passionate about sharing the clinical value of ultrasound imaging with other clinicians in sports medicine he developed his own MSK ultrasound courses in 2006 and a few years later co-founded SMUG (Sports Medicine Ultrasound Group), which specialises in intensive, closely supervised practical MSK ultrasound training pathways for clinicians.

He is regularly invited to lecture on Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Imaging in Sports Medicine and provides advanced ultrasound skills training for MSK clinicians in sports medicine both nationally and internationally.

Christopher Myers BSc MSc PGCert US MCSP

Extended Scope Physiotherapist,

Registered Osteopath & MSK Sonographer , MSc Sports Medicine

Clinical Director, Complete Physio, Independent Prescriber

Chris is a highly experienced Extended Scope Physiotherapist, Osteopath & MSK Sonographer. Chris has fully integrated diagnostic ultrasound into his clinical practice and carries out articular and peri-articular ultrasound guided injections.

Chris is a qualified musculoskeletal sonographer, with a PG Cert and CASE accredited qualification from Canterbury Christ Church University. He has taught ultrasound both nationally and internationally on a variety of courses and conferences, at universities and professional sports clubs. He teaches diagnostic ultrasound as visiting lecturer at University College London (UCL) and Canterbury University.

Chris runs a group of private physiotherapy practices, Complete Physio, based in London treating recreational and elite level sports people. He has worked for the English Institute of Sport (EIS), British Athletics, Tottenham FC and worked at the London Olympics.

Chris is passionate about integrating ultrasound into practice and feels it is an invaluable tool in the diagnosis and management of MSK conditions. He has a particular interest in tendon pathology and shoulder pain.
