The word mucus usually makes us think of stuffy noses during a cold, but it's a whole lot more. Since evolving hundreds of millions of years ago, mucus has been an exceptional defence mechanism governing what comes in and what stays out.

Erin Pallott is a final year PhD student at the University of Manchester researching mucus responses to parasitic infections - a specialist in biology that ruins dinner table conversations. This talk will introduce you to the wonderful niche world of mucus research, from ancient medicine to the cutting-edge.

Frequently asked questions

What is a SciBar?

A SciBar is literally science in a bar – an opportunity to hear a guest STEM academic, researcher, scientist or enthusiast talk about their specialist topic in an informal environment.

Who is it for?

Anybody with a passing interest in the topic and there is no assumed knowledge of the subject. If you have a general interest in science, then a free Didsbury SciBar science event is a good place to learn a bit more, or to ask the questions you’ve always wanted answered.

What's its about?

Our topics are fairly diverse and vary each month; from Artificial Intelligence to Zoology. If one month’s subject of discussion isn’t grabbing your interest, keep an eye on our events calendar as we’ll inevitably be discussing something totally different the following month.

How much does it cost?

Didsbury SciBar is FREE whether you attend in person or online thanks to the generosity of our speakers, organisers and our hosts at The Albert Club.

Where is Didsbury SciBar?

Didsbury SciBar is hosted in the main bar at The Albert Club, 39-41 Old Lansdowne Road, West Didsbury, Manchester M20 2PA. You can also pre-register via Eventbrite to participate online.

How do I get there?

The Albert Club is easily accessible from the Metrolink and the main south Manchester bus corridor. There's on-site bike storage and limited free car parking. Directions are listed here - https://didsburyscibar.co.uk/manchester-scibar-science-meetup/

Do I need to be a member?

No - Didsbury SciBar is open to all. Just turn up. We are a laid back and welcoming bunch – there’s no membership or obligation. You do not need to be a member of The Albert Club to attend Didsbury SciBar.

Who runs Didsbury SciBar?

Originally conceived in 2008 by the North West branch of the British Science Association, Didsbury SciBar has, since 2019, expanded under the stewardship of a passionate collective of volunteers who have backgrounds in science, engineering and technology.
