Description

Overview

This is a fantastic weekend that will give you some great summits and keep you away from the crowds, even on the very popular Snowdon! The aim of this weekend is to reach the summit of Snowdon and the summit of the atmospheric Glyder Fawr.

The route we will be taking for Snowdon for this weekend is indeed a connoisseur’s route to the summit, and one that avoids most of the crowds that are found on the traditional routes. The spectacular Cwm Llan valley reveals its steep walls and tumbling stream and there is a piece of fascinating political history that is a worthwhile point to take a break. A climb past some fascinating remains of old buildings, part of the slate quarries and mining industries in the area, is rewarded with wonderful views across the waters of Llyn Llydaw, Glaslyn and a great view of the spectacular Crib Goch ridge. The route finishes with short tough section just before we reach the well-earned summit ridge. After the summit we return via a different descent route and we arrive back at our start point having covered a fantastic 8 miles.

For Glyder Fawr we will approach from the South side. An unusual approach that has less rocky paths and routes than the Northern side, so it offers a different experience to the top of the iconic Glyder. There are fine views in all directions and the view of Crib Goch from this angle is mouth-watering. Our path snakes upwards between some great rocky outcrops until we make the summit. We will then head to the nearby summit of Glyder Fach, the location for some of the scenes from the Dragonslayer movie. Our descent covers ground that is not often walked, yet it brings more great views of Moel Siabod and the Moelwynion range and we finish our 6.5 mile walk back at our start point.

Itinerary

We will arrive at the accommodation on the Friday evening where we will have an informal briefing and talk about what lies ahead for the weekend.

On the Saturday morning we will leave the accommodation at around 8:00am so that we can start the walk by 9am. We will take time to ensure that everyone is organised and ready before we set off on the hike. The walk is about 8 miles and is a circular route, so we will finish back at our start point.

The pace will be steady, and we will have time for breaks and stops for snacks as required. We return to the accommodation at the end of our walk.

On the Sunday we will check out of the accommodation and make our way to the start point for our second walk. This walk is about 6.5 miles.

Once we have triumphantly completed our walk we will set off for home with great memories, stories and photographs of the weekend. A detailed itinerary of the event including timings, directions to the meeting point and further information about the event, will be sent out to all booked participants.

Training and Preparation

We will ensure that you have all the information you need, and our expert team of experienced guides will ensure your safety throughout the event. However, the more preparation you put in before the event the greater your enjoyment and chance of success.

These are mountains. The terrain is rugged, rocky and mountainous so please arrive prepared. You will need the correct kit. Your footwear is particularly important. If you are not used to hiking or hill-walking, then the sooner that you start training the better. Your chance of success on any of our events can be greatly increased by being well prepared for the challenge ahead; mentally, physically and with the right equipment. If you have any questions, then please ask us.

Event Grading

This is not a technical hike, so the summit is within reach of any reasonably fit and determined person.
