Event description
A thought-provoking documentary that explores the experience of women and non-binary people in various UK underground music scenes.

About this Event

‘So which band is your boyfriend in' is a thought-provoking documentary that explores the experience of women and non-binary people in various UK underground music scenes. Giving exciting insights into how women and gender-fluid people experience the UK music scene, the documentary raises awareness of existing gender inequalities in music but it is also a very powerful source of inspiration and empowerment for women, trans and non-binary people who love music and/or pursue a career in Britain’s music industry. If this sounds like you, make sure you put this film-screening event into your diary. 😊

I am organising the event together with Spotlight Music and we are screening the film in the wonderful Star and Shadow cinema. Donations will go towards the documentary and Safe Gigs For Women.

About the film:

“This documentary features the views of a range of women/gender-fluid individuals from all walks of life within the UK music scene. It looks at how and why people get involved in music, the positive and the not-so-positive experiences, and the possible ways we can change things.

The gender divide exists - there’s no doubt about it. And recently there have been an increasing number of press articles on the issue, but they only scratch the surface. So, Which Band is Your Boyfriend in? provides an in-depth account of the situation.

From the outset it was my intention to create a film which could have an impact on the awareness of equality issues in the UK music scene. I hope that this project will inspire young people to pick up an instrument, learn to record music or just get out there to see live bands perform.” – Suzy Harrison, director of ‘So Which Band Is Your Boyfriend In’

A little bit about me:

I’m Sarah, a music lover, guitar enthusiast, writer, researcher and feminist from Germany. When I moved to Newcastle in 2017, I fell in love with the North East music community while volunteering at various music festivals and Sofar Sounds Newcastle. Later I started writing and editing for the local online music magazine Spotlight Music. While living in Newcastle and getting to know the music community I met a number of very hard-working and inspiring women, who really try to make the music industry in the North East and beyond a more diverse, safer and better place. Both my own experience and these women inspired me to start a PhD at Newcastle University to research the experience of women rock musicians in the British music industry and hopefully help to make this industry a better place for us all!
