About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

So you want to be a Scientist? Join Clare Ray and her colleague Prem Kumar from University of Birmingham in this interactive session! They will cover some of the lesser known skills and qualities that make a good scientist, making you think about which skills you might already have and those that could be further developed.

Professor Clare Ray graduated with a 1st class degree in Medical Science from the University of Birmingham (2000) where she went on to study for a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology (2004). As a post-doctoral researcher, she developed her interests in cardiorespiratory integration and control and was appointed as a lecturer in 2010. She has taught physiology to science, medical, dental and pharmacy students and has been a member of the Physiological Society's Education and Outreach committee. She is passionate about supporting young people from groups underrepresented in science and healthcare to access degrees and careers in STEM and through her successful work in this area and in higher education she became a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2022) and Chair of Widening Participation in Biomedical Education (2023). She has chaired the National Medical Schools Widening Participation Forum and is a Trustee of the STEM charity In2scienceuk.

Professor Prem Kumar is an academic scientist with years of experience working in cardiorespiratory physiology in a medical school environment. From his school in Suffolk Prem did an undergraduate degree at the University of Leeds and a DPhil at the University of Oxford, before working at the University of Birmingham. He is passionate about education and a strong believer in active learning.

In2scienceUK is a charity that empowers young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their potential and pursue degrees, apprenticeships and careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

By leveraging the passion and expertise of STEM professionals and researchers, In2scienceUK gives A-Level students an opportunity to gain insight into the STEM sector as well as the knowledge and confidence to progress to university. In addition to running an award-winning summer programme which transitioned to a virtual format in 2020 in response to Covid-19, they run events and workshops throughout the year to provide ongoing support to In2scienceUK students and alumni.
