Event description

Description

Soapbox is part of Dragon Hall - London’s most central open-access community space, serving socially excluded communities in Covent Garden and across London. Since 2012, this work has increasingly focused on providing digital inclusion opportunities for the most socially excluded young people, including those who are learning disabled, LGBT and those in care.

Dragon Hall was successful with its competitive tender to develop Soapbox – a bespoke digital and technology centre on Old Street, on the doorstep of London’s Tech City. Soapbox is now OPEN for business offering unparalleled access to Tech City and also to Dragon Hall’s substantial network of schools, colleges, community groups, educators and technologists.

Soapbox aims to examine the impact of technologies (3D Printing, Internet Radio, computer coding, digital animation, Virtual Reality, Audio/AV production, etc.) on the development of digital inclusion, advanced digital skills acquisition, 21st Century competences (Collaboration; Communication; Critical Thinking & Creativity) and social action amongst socially excluded young people (YP) aged 11 to 25 years old.

Participants will be taken through a six – stage Digital Theory of Change, which draws upon The Five-Stage Model of Adult Skill Acquisition (Dreyfus, 2004) in its design:

Exclusion – Novice – Advanced Beginner – Competent – Proficient – Expert

Changes are based upon scaffolded, experiential learning (Woodetal, 1976) that take place in non-formal education milieux, where young people learn-by-doing, progress from exclusion to expert at their own pace and move from passively consuming education to active engagement in their learning.

In doing so, young people will follow 20:20 Digital Vision’s Learning Pathway, through a digital badge scheme:

  • Learn – developing skills, capabilities & competences;
  • Test - examining comprehension and understanding;
  • Award - recognising and celebrating development via Digital Badges;
  • Show - facilitating effective presentation of skills through e-portfolios.

This represents an innovative way of delivering youth work and “industry-led digital training” (Science and Technology Committee, 2016), a call-to-action where industry professionals provide ‘core’ digital opportunities unavailable elsewhere, supported by qualified youth workers who facilitate personal capabilities and 21st Century competences development.

The networking event will provide a tour of the new Soapbox youth centre, give STEM Ambassadors a chance to network with both youth workers and young people from Dragon Hall and explore opportunities for STEM Ambassadors to support, design or run programmes at Soapbox.

Any STEM Ambassadors who are interested in finding out more are welcome to attend, any STEM Ambassadors with skills or experience in the following would be most suited:
