SOAS Concert Series: Amrit Kaur Lohia

Women's Voices from the Partition of India

Born and raised in London, SOAS graduate Amrit Kaur Lohia is a sārangī player and vocalist who specialises in Punjabi folk, jazz and soul. She also plays mbira and dilruba. Based in London, Amrit tours internationally and appeared at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. She is also a youth worker and founder of ‘humanised.org’, a social enterprise dedicated to humanising history and social issues through the Arts. For this concert, which takes place 70 years since India gained independence, Amrit will be performing a selection of songs telling the story of the country’s partition, as well as some classic Punjabi folk songs and some of her own compositions based on the works of famed poet Amrita Pritam. She will be accompanied on tabla by Pratab Singh Lohia.

This concert is part of Bloomsbury Festival 2017, whose theme this year is ‘independence’.

Recommended donation: £3.

Please note that venue capacity is limited and making this donation online guarantees that you will be allocated a seat for the concert. Remaining seats on the night will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
