Event description
21st February 2020 MUSICIANS OF SOAS A SOAS Music Showcase featuring formidable student artists, The Sages & Aga Ujma!

About this Event

THE SAGES: It is said that music is the language of the soul, and nothing could be truer for this world music fusion band. The Sages (竹林七贤), a London-based world band of promising young musicians, draws inspirations from different music elements throughout time and history. Composed by by Yijia Tu, Peadar Connolly-Davey and Gregor Bauer, this group of inspirational musicians from across the globe have earned their reputation as a talented and trendy band to look out for.

As a diverse cosmopolitan generation growing up under an age of globalization and other social changes, the band aims to explore to break through concepts such as “East” and “West,” cultural identity, and musical “genres” through both original composition and adaption of traditional folk music. Indeed the “The Sages 竹林七贤” is a reference to a group of seven literati, artists and scholars in ancient China who chose to escape mundane and hypocritical secular life and status to live in the remote natural countryside with the companionship of music, poetry, art (and wine) in search of a higher spiritual fulfilment.

AGA UJMA: Aga Ujma is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter living between London, Central Java and Poland. She mixes her classical upbringing and folk influences from Poland with music studies at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Surakarta, Indonesia.

Her solo performances focus on exploring and connecting Indonesian and Polish folk music with personal stories and the accompaniment of unique Indonesian instruments. Her favourite instruments are the East Indonesian bamboo zither Sasando, Central Javanese zither Siter, and metallophone gendér.

Aga has collaborated with numerous experimental composers from Indonesia, Mexico and Los Angeles, plus London's Southbank Gamelan Players group. She has performed at Lanjong Art Festival 2017 in South Borneo, British Academy Awards 2017, Tate Modern Exchange 2018, International Gamelan Festival 2018 in Surakarta (Central Java), Indonesia Kontemporer London 2018, and we can’t wait to see her in the SOAS Concert Series!
