Event description

Description

Are you on the committee of a small community group in Reading and looking for support? Being on a committee or managing a charity is extremely rewarding but it can also sometimes be challenging or isolating and there's a lot to learn in running a group! So why not come along to our Social Action Leaders Network!

How the network can help you?

The network will help to:

  • increase your confidence in your role in managing or leading a small group;
  • increase your skills in leading others in your community, planning activities, managing finance, communitcations, and all the practicalities of running a small community group;
  • help you to build a network of peer support with those in similar roles around the town.
Who is the network for?

Anyone who is on the committee of a small community group in Reading or manages a group, whether in a paid role or as a lead volunteer. For example you might be on the committee of a local community centre, a lunch club, a walking group or any other group that is providing services or activities in Reading. Ideally you will be involved in that group already in either a committee position, a lead volunteer or manager.

When and where will the network take place?

The network will be held quarterly in the RVA Training Room, The Community Place, 3rd Floor, Reading Central Library, RG1 3BQ, usually from 10am - 12noon.

The first session will be on Wednesday 10 July. You can book your free space through the link above.

Future sessions will be October, January, April. Keep an eye on our events page for dates.

What are the themes for the networks?

The first network on the 10 July will explore:

Your group's vision: Creatively imagining what success looks like for your group, and top tips on leading others with inspiration.

Guest Speaker: Aisha Malik, manager of Reading Community Learning Centre

Aisha is very passionate about community action in Reading, and very experienced in motivating and inspiring her team. She will share her experience of running a small charity and how you can do the same!

As well as a short talk, the session will also include break out discussions, having a go at revisiting your vision, and a chance to network with others who who are running community groups in Reading over tea, coffee and biscuits. The network is informal with plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions and everyone's got experience that will benefit others in the network!

You can also let us know what you'd like to focus on in furture networks. This could include:

  • Planning your activities so you are moving towards your groups purpose/vision
  • Funding - what funding it there for small groups and what do you need to think about when applying?
  • Doing - i.e. Putting your plan into action, how to delegate, what processes can help and how to deal with changes along the way.
  • Communication skills - working with others, networking skills, elevator pitches and spreading the word.
  • Problem solving - spotting and addressing difficulties, including the support that's available.
  • Reviewing - a key step when applying for your next pot of funding. A time to reflect, with tools to help you review, learn and potentially enhance or change what you're offering.

Please book your space through the link above and we hope to see you there!
