Event description

Description

Here at The Academy: SPACE we have always believed that an understanding of the social context is fundamental to the work that we do as listening helpers or counsellors. As we strive to understand our own relationship to power, discrimination and oppression, strong emotions can surface. We recognise that the process of raising our own awareness about these issues is a challenging one, for we can belong both to oppressed groups and privileged groups at the same time.

These are difficult times for many in our society, and as counsellors we are also prey to systems that we may feel are exploitative or oppressive. Counsellors are once again asking the question: Is it possible for counselling to be a politically neutral activity?

For this reason, we plan to run a series of events under the banner, “The Social Context Series”, which can be attended as stand alone CPD, or hopefully contributing to a Certificate course that is currently in development (further information to follow).

These sessions will generally run for 2 hours on an evening and, in line with our policy of offering low-cost CPD, will be priced at £20. As the series develops we may offer longer workshops and invite speakers from further afield, which will affect the price.

We hope that you will join us, in what we imagine will be an interesting and challenging process of learning.

The second workshop in the Series is

“Gender, Relationship and Sexual Diversities” - Polly Singer

"This is not a niche area of specialist practice: gender, sexuality and relationships are fundamental aspects of all our lives: if counsellors and psychotherapists can't handle them, who can?"

Catherine Jackson, Therapy Today Dec 2017

Following on from the revised BACP Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) published in November 2017, this workshop is an opportunity to deepen understanding and engagement around gender, relationship and sexual diversities.

We will consider what barriers may exist for us as counsellors (and fellow humans) in engaging with these aspects of someone's experience and identity. We will explore how we as counsellors can work sensitively and effectively with gender, relationship and sexual diversities.
