Social media: best practice and how to post using our new Social Media Management Platform

Social media has come a long way since its inception in the early 2000s, and that’s especially true for policing.

Now police forces across the world, and right here in North Yorkshire, use it to appeal for information, highlight the important work of our teams, and share updates that are valuable to our communities.

In North Yorkshire we now have almost 200,000 followers on our forcewide Facebook account, 113,000 on Twitter, 33,000 on Instagram and 8,000 on LinkedIn which makes for some pretty impressive figures.

That doesn’t include the additional 62,000 followers we also have across our local Facebook pages (i.e., Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate Borough, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough Borough, Selby District and York), the 26,500 followers we have across our local Twitter accounts, and the almost 6,000 followers we have across our jobs and careers Facebook and Twitter accounts.

That’s almost half a million followers of our 22 official accounts!

But social media is an extremely busy and highly competitive landscape, and one which changes all the time, and that it is why it is so important to keep on top of those changes and make sure we’re always evolving and getting it ‘right’ so that our communities get to see our content.

If you have received this invitation, it is because you have been selected (most likely by your Inspector or Superintendent) to become one of our 201 licence holders who will be responsible for posting to social media across the organisation.

As part of being a licence holder you will be given your own unique login details, but before you start posting, you will need to attend one of our training sessions to ensure you’re fully up to speed with our new Social Media Management Platform and the ‘North Yorkshire Police’ way of doing things on social media.

In this session you will:

• Learn how to post using our new Social Media Management Platform

• Find out how to add it to your work issued mobile phone (please bring your phone along to the session)

• Get a refresher on the latest best practice for posting to social media including what to post, accessibility, imagery and much more.

• Have the chance to ask and have any questions answered.

To book a place on one of the sessions, please select the date which works for you. Please note these sessions are virtual and each session should take no longer than an hour and a half.

If none of the dates are suitable for you, please notify the Digital Communications team asap via digitalcommunicationsteam@northyorkshire.police.uk. You can also use this email address if you have any questions ahead of the sessions.

Thanks everyone and we look forward to seeing you soon.
