Event information

The University's first social mobility conference aims to bring academics, professional services staff and students together to share insights and understanding about the University's role in promoting social mobility by working to improve access to higher education and to create a level playing for students to thrive.

University staff and students with an interest in social mobility and widening participation are welcome to this event which is being organised by the University's new Centre for Social Mobiilty.

Programme information

The event will be opened by Professor Tim Quine, DVC Education, with a keynote speech from Dr Lee Elliott Major, Chief Executive of the Sutton Trust. The conference will also involve:

  • Presentations from students, academics and practitioners on topics such as why social mobility matters, building a whole institution approach, evidence-based practice and challenges for universities
  • A variety of workshops of interest to academics, students and professional services staff including inclusive teaching; the role of the personal tutor in enhancing social mobility; definitions of disadvantage and taking an evidence based approach; adapting policies and practice to support a diverse range of students
  • Information stands and networking opportunities
  • Posters and abstracts
  • Centre for Social Mobility reception
