Employers’ masterclass: Social Mobility, leadership and culture

Our latest masterclass puts culture and leadership under the spotlight to explore how employers can forge a compelling, shared vision of the importance of social mobility in any organisation.

Developing a culture that fosters inclusion and accountability requires that employees at all levels are able to understand the importance of socio-economic diversity and actions being taken to improve it.

Your workforce should be able to see that there are those in leadership and senior roles responsible for engaging the workforce and driving socio-economic diversity and inclusion within the organisation.

Measurement, strategy and effective leadership all contribute to making sure that employees understand and feel ownership of an organisation’s social mobility efforts.

UK health and beauty retailer Superdrug and their sister business Savers are social mobility champions and has sought to embed a culture of inclusivity throughout its 18000-strong workforce. Social mobility is a core pillar of its ‘Everyone Matters’ approach to diversity and inclusion: its ‘Access All Areas’ network focuses on creating fantastic opportunities and removing barriers for all employees. Like each of its six networks, ‘Access All Areas’ is led by a steering group formed of passionate individuals across the business.

In the last few years, Superdrug has also made a number of public commitments in this space, and recently became a signatory to the ‘Social Mobility Pledge’. In 2020, Superdrug was named among the Top-75 employers on the 2020 Social Mobility Index - one of just two retail businesses to be included

About the Masterclass:

For this session, we’ll be joined by Caroline King, Head of People for Head Office, Reward and Inclusion, for a case study presentation. Caroline will outline Superdrug’s path to embedding a positive culture that supports social mobility, through effective leadership, transparency, strategy and data. 

Following the presentation, Joanne Mackie, Customer and People Director, Superdrug & Savers will take part in a fireside chat with Paula Kemp, The SMC’s Head of Employers’ Programme.   

Joanne will share her views on the building blocks of an inclusive culture, and answer attendees questions as part of an interactive Q&A. 

After the event 

After the session, we will share an ‘after-pack’ with attendees that includes a check-list to help you refine your ideas. We will also be uploading a recording of the presentations and case-studies for those of you who were unable to attend.
