Event description

Description

Do university degrees and further education qualifications enable young people from low income backgrounds to move into better paid prospects? What are the factors that help or hinder social mobility?

As part of our 350th anniversary, Walcot Foundation have commissioned University of Birmingham (Dr Simon Pemberton & Dr Rachel Humphris) to carry out in depth qualitative research on the journeys of 40 participants from low income households, through further and higher education and into the labour market.

This research will highlight the issues that students from low income backgrounds face in making the most of further and higher education, the obstacles and opportunities in finding well-paid careers and recommendations for action.

After the research findings presentation, there will be a panel discussion with:

  • Syreeta Allen, Deputy Director of Widening Participation Kings College London
  • Teresa Clay, Chair of Grants Committee, Walcot Foundation
  • Rachael Millar, Head of Policy – Work & Skills, Social Mobility Commission
  • Dr Simon Pemberton, Head of Department Social Policy, Sociology & Criminology, University of Birmingham

The event will be chaired by Baroness Ruth Lister.
