Event description
This workshop will help campaigners understand social movements.

About this event

In recent years we've seen the rise of people-powered movements like Black Lives Matter and the school strikes for climate, driving change and bringing huge numbers to the streets. But these activities are the tip of the iceberg - much is going on below the surface to drive the success of transformational social movements.

'Movement building' is understandably attractive to campaigners working for long term, transformational change, but is often misunderstood. Social movements themselves involve multiple groups and organisations working over decades to address a broad thematic issue. While organisations cannot build their own movements, they can build power across movements through strong relationships, and by using people-powered movement building tactics.

This workshop will help campaigners understand social movements, exploring how to work with them and how to bring mass movement tactics to building campaigns.

Participants will:

  • • Understand how to define a social movement
  • • Be introduced to social movement theory
  • • Identify the movement/s their campaign is connected to
  • • Identify key movement relationships to build
  • • Explore how people-powered movement building tactics can be used in campaigns

This workshop is led by Natasha Adams, a UK based activism researcher, trainer and strategy consultant. She is Co-Director of Organising for Change, leads The Ecology of Social Movements course at Ulex and writes a popular blog about social change.
