Event description

Description

The older generation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans clients who grew up in a hostile climate of prejudice and discrimination are more likely to be estranged from family and lacking in the social support and connections to help them navigate their world. Yet many still have difficulty self-identifying to social workers and other social care professionals because of a lack of confidence in service providers as a result of bad experiences in the past.

Enquiring into older people’s sexual orientation and gender-identity requires well-chosen questions and a sensitive communication to gain the answers that will be most useful for client assessment. This very practical course led by LGBT+ social workers demonstrates how to establish and build rapport with older LGBT+ people, using clear questions and an empathic technique best suited to collect honest and informative replies.
