Socialism 101: Police, racism & the state
Event Information
About this Event
Speakers include Elizabeth Adofo and Nadia Sayed, both of whom are Black Lives Matter and anti-racist activists.
The racist police murder of George Floyd sparked mass protest and riots across the USA. The revolt that started in Minneapolis quickly mushroomed across the world into demanding much wider change.
From huge street protest marches and riots to street corner meetings and online debates, the fight against racism is centre stage.
The #BlackLivesMatter movement has raised fundamental questions about the role of the police in capitalist society, institutional racism and the legacy of slavery and empire. Black people - in both the US and Britain - have seen disproportionate deaths from covid, building on systemic issues, inequality , disproportionate poverty, unemployment and low pay.
Millions are asking why the system we live under is so viciously prejudiced - and what we can do to beat it.
This Socialism 101 for students and young workers in the Midlands will look at why capitalism needs racism to survive, how working class people can come together to tear the whole system down and build a new society free of racism and inequality. If these are questions you've been asking yourself then this event is for you.
Building on the ideas of Malcom X, Angela Davis and Karl Marx , join us to get answers to the following questions and to build a mass anti racist socialist movement!
Can the police be reformed?
Is racism an individual or systemic problem?
Can you have Capitalism without racism?
Can Privilege Theory solve the problem of institutional racism?
What would a Socialist society be like?
