Socially engaged art in a time of ‘social’ distancing
Event Information
About this Event
During this online presentation and interactive workshop Sophie Hope will present some of her practice-based research into cultural democracy and the commissioning of socially engaged art. During the workshop participants will discuss with Sophie and each other what role socially engaged artists play in this current crisis and what this mean for the profession. How does a practice that facilitates intersubjectivity between people cope when mediated through screens? How can we use this time to (re)consider economies of care and social reproductive work and our role within them?
At this difficult time we understand that you may not be able to pay full price for these sessions so to make them accessible all our online event tickets are now 'Pay What You Can'.
Suggested pricing (should you be able to afford it) is: £40 full price / £20 student and for those on benefits or currently out of work please make a donation of whatever you can afford.

WHO’S IT FOR
Socially engaged artists and those who use participation in their work who are interested in responding to the current situation and advancing their practice in the future.
THE FACILITATOR
Sophie is an artist, curator, researcher and lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London. Her work explores the multiple sites, methods and legitimacies of practice-based research. She produces works with pluralised perspectives using diverse methods such as performative interviews, audio installations, flow diagrams and communal dinners.
Her work is often developed with others through the format of devised workshops exploring subjects such as art and politics in the year 1984, physical and emotional experiences of immaterial work, stories people tell about socially engaged art commissions and the ethics of employability in the creative industries.
Sophie also writes and facilitates workshops, dealing with issues of public art, the politics of socially engaged art and the ethics of work in the cultural and creative industries.
