About this Event

Talk Abstract

AI as a concept has been around since the 1950’s and is very much in use in many applications already. But with the current wave of AI technology development riding on the back of the latest developments in machine learning and data processing, the scene is set for AI to be used in many more systems and applications, which will profoundly impact society - for good or ill. Because of the potential dangers inherent in the unfettered development of AI and the likelihood of unanticipated consequences of such development, there is a strong feeling throughout the AI community, including in the AI industry and in governments that are planning for AI futures, that we must determine how to develop AI systems and applications in a socially responsible way, but as yet there is no common agreement as to what this means or how we build AI systems in a way that is good for humanity. In this talk we will consider what socially responsible AI might mean, and look at current attempts to define methodologies to ensure AI development is undertaken in a socially responsible way. This will include the pressing need for diversity in AI, and ways to achieve this.
