Event description

Description

Screening as part of Skip Out, South Kiosk is pleased to present a free, one off screening of Soda_Jerk's TERROR NULLIUS (2018).

54 Minutes Run-Time.

Screening organised by guest curator, Sophie Netchaef.

Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, TERROR NULLIUS is a political revenge fable which offers an unwriting of Australian national mythologies. Binding together a documentary impulse with the bent plotlines of Australian film texts, Soda_Jerk’s revisionist history opens a wilful narrative space where cinema fictions and historical facts permeate each other in new ways. The apocalyptic desert camps of Mad Max 2 become the site of refugee detention, flesh-eating sheep are recast as anti-colonial insurgents and a feminist motorcycle gang goes vigilante on Mel Gibson.

TERROR NULLIUS was commissioned by ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image)

TERROR NULLIUS is screening as part of South Kiosk's present exhibition Skip Out, featuring work by Soda_Jerk, Gray Wielebinski and Bedwyr Williams. The exhibition is guest curated by Sophie Netchaef.

Skip Out explores the formation of cultural identity and histories of myth making through anecdote. Beginning with the proposition of the meme as a self- replicating unit of cultural identity, the exhibition explores the mechanisms of mimicry through which such cultural signifiers perpetuate and the role of nonsense, absurdity and productive fiction in sedimenting collective identities. Taking the concepts of nonsense and absurdity as underlying qualities of cultural allegory, often compounded by the presence of humour, the exhibition serves to identify how these same mechanisms can offer a strategy of critical resistance, a way to correct existing legacies of identity and to build new ones. In a time where the internet meme as mainstream media coincides with a rise of cultural patriotism, Skip Out brings together artists who explore the construction of cultural contagion, reclaiming the techniques of repetition, imitation and subversive storytelling to provoke alternative narratives.

Skip Out runs until July 21st.
