Description

Event Details:

We all have to communicate with a variety of people about numerous topics everyday whether at home or at work, which means that there will be occasions when our conversations go really well and other times when you wish you’d either planned it better or responded differently. We are facilitating a couple of half day workshops which although very distinct provide you with some very powerful tools and techniques to handle all conversations when attended as a full day workshop.
In the morning we will be focusing on how you can create a ‘feedback’ culture to ensure people continually grow and learn how they can be their best selves. Ken Blanchard once said that ‘feedback is the breakfast of champions’. With it we find out what we’re doing well and where we can improve. Without it we can be trundling along not knowing whether we are applying the right effort to the right tasks and therefore be surprised at our annual appraisals when we are told we haven’t achieved our goals!

In the afternoon, we will look at how we can best manage conflict and deliver some of the more unwelcome messages that we are bound to have in our managerial or HR roles. There are often occasions when the message we need to deliver may not be a pleasant one, whether it’s telling someone that they are going to be made redundant, they’re not performing well, or they may have a sensitive personnel issue. However, the most considerate thing to do is to make time to have the conversation sooner rather than later. The longer it rattles around in your head, the harder it actually becomes. The issue grows, the anticipation of the reaction becomes bleaker and in the end we have a conversation that goes one of two ways – it’s either confrontational or skirts over the actual issue. In both scenarios the outcome is negative. From the confrontational aspect you gain anger and disillusionment and from the ‘skirting’ you don’t get any change as the person is still unaware of the issue!

The morning session will begin at 9.30 and finish at 12.30. Refreshments will be available from 9.00. During the morning we will:
• Highlight the importance of giving and receiving feedback in your working life
• Determine what stops us giving feedback and understand ways to help you feel more confident
• Understand why some people don’t hear good news and others don’t hear constructive news and learn ways in which to handle both situations
• Identify ways to be explicit in their feedback whilst maintaining positive regard for the other person
• Help all attendees to feel more confident and competent in the use of their newly learned techniques by practicing them on a variety of scenarios

The afternoon session will begin at 14.00 and finish at 17.00. Refreshments will be available from 13.30. During the afternoon we will:
• Determine what creates conflict in communications and in turn what makes a ‘difficult’ conversation. However also understand that when managed well, how it can stimulate innovation and create better decision making
• Help you to understand why you worry about having certain conversations and provide you with coping strategies to manage your own anxiety and manage your mindset effectively
• Provide you with techniques to remain in control of the situation whilst being empathetic to the other person’s needs.
• Help you to understand the various characters who press your ‘hot’ buttons and create strategies to manage them
• Outline a step by step process to manage conflict
The benefits of both of these sessions will be that attendees will learn a lot about themselves eg how they react in certain situations, what makes them behave in this way and what they individually can do differently as a result. Each person will have time to practice their new learning in a safe environment whilst gaining hints and tips from their fellow delegates.
