Description

SoGE Walk & Talk: Trad Japan, Mod Nippon

Stroll around the historical Ryogoku district of Tokyo to get a taste of both Old and New Japan, with SoGE alumnus Stuart Varnam-Atkin (Jesus, 1968) as your expert guide. Stuart has been a long-term Japan resident and his work includes writing and presenting TV programmes on many aspects of Japanese culture, sumo commentary, and narrating ‘Japan Video Topics’ on the Japanese Government Internet TV. He’s also an avid collector of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

The tour will include a visit to the Sumo Museum inside the Kokugikan Sumo Arena, the nearby Tokyo-Edo Museum and the brand-new Hokusai Museum. And if you happen to be free in the evening, Ryogoku offers a number of restaurants run by former wrestlers serving the traditional wrestlers’ stew ‘Chanko nabe’.

Meeting point: Ryogoku Station (JR)
Cost: approx. 1,100 yen (£8) - payable on arrival
